Course Description

A complete, in-person core program to begin practice in evidence-based breastfeeding and lactation care. This five-day course is essential education for any healthcare professional or individual who works with new mothers and their newborns, or as the beginning process for becoming a lactation consultant (IBCLC). This in-depth, in-person course enables participants to provide accurate, current and consistent information about breastfeeding and lactation and to support new families in feeding their babies from birth through the process of weaning.

  • Individuals planning to take the IBLCE exam
  • Individuals without a prior training in lactation
  • WIC staff, including breastfeeding peer counselors
  • Hospital staff wanting a solid foundation in infant feeding practices

  • Describe the importance of human milk for human babies.
  • Discuss possible risks of artificial milks for human babies.
  • Discuss some marketing tactics used by commercial baby food industries.
  • List the minimum education requirements for physicians and staff in maternity and pediatric settings.
  • Identify teaching points appropriate for prenatal classes and interactions with pregnant women.
  • Describe barriers to effective communication with women about feeding their babies.
  • Discuss the effects of culture on breastfeeding outcomes.
  • Discuss times when breastfeeding promotion may be contraindicated.
  • List birthing routines that may influence breastfeeding success.
  • Discuss hospital birth policies and procedures that support exclusive breastfeeding.
  • Discuss the rationale of skin to skin care for mother and baby.
  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of lactation and the process of breastfeeding.
  • Describe how our care influences milk production.
  • Describe the basic elements of successful early feedings.
  • Identify the hallmarks of milk transfer and effective breastfeeding.
  • Perform a breastfeeding LATCH score.
  • Identify the special needs of babies born too early.
  • List ways for mothers to maintain and maximize breastmilk production when separated from their babies.
  • List possible medical conditions where breastmilk substitutes may be appropriate for supplementing babies.
  • Discuss practices that can help to avoid unnecessary use of formula.
  • Discuss how and how much to supplement when formula is deemed necessary.
  • Evaluate the current AAP recommendation about infant sleep.
  • Discuss the conflict of the biology of newborns and US parenting culture/rules.
  • List several possible responses when women request formula, nighttime nursery care.
  • Discuss the rationale of restricting pacifier use in the early weeks of breastfeeding.
  • Describe infant feeding cues.
  • Develop a care plan to help a mother with nipple pain, engorgement, infection.
  • Discuss the research that demonstrates the success of implementing the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.
  • Discuss the importance of providing protection and support to childbearing women.
